But I admire him most for being a Canadian who succeeded in Hollywood without turning his back on where he came from, and being a recognizable and reliable performer no matter what he did on screen.

Yep- he was born in Saint John, New Brunswick (where MGM found Louis B. Mayer spent much of his youth) and was a Companion of the Order of Canada.
